Sun Seto is the main female character as well as the show's mermaid from the anime series, "My Bride Is A Mermaid". She is the daughter of Gōzaburō Seto and Ren Seto and the wife of Nagasumi Michishio (which now makes her Sun Michishio).
San Seto is the only daughter of the leader of the Seto-gumi, part of the Seto Inland Sea Fish-Type Mafia Alliance. She usually appears in human form, characterized by her flowing light brown hair and eyes of the same color. When wet or in her mermaid form, she reveals a distinctive pink fish tail, the hallmark of her mermaid nature. Her name "San" (燦) is homophonous in Japanese with the English word "sun" and the number "three" (三, san). Consequently, her fan club uses a red sun as its symbol, and she is sensitive about her name being mistaken for the number.
Personality[]
- Sun is a kind girl with a strong moral compass. She is a firm believer in mermaid chivalry and upholding traditional Japanese values for womanhood, hence was prepared to either die or marry Nagasumi for breaking mermaid law, but eventually grew to genuinely love the boy. She loves her family, but she disapproves of their actions, namely trying to kill Nagasumi. Sun's beauty, kindness, and charm earn her the adoration of nearly everyone she meets.
- Unfortunately, she is also rather naive and can be rather ditzy. She believes that her father and the Seto Gang trying to kill Nagasumi is out of a genuine desire to protect her and appreciates it to a degree, even tearfully thanking them for "looking out for (her)" once (even if she makes it clear she is annoyed by their actions and hates seeing Nagasumi almost die). Furthermore, she doesn't see the darkness in Nagasumi's parents despite witnessing their abuse of their son firsthand due to how respectful they are to her, and she gives them respect nonetheless since they are her in-laws. While she loves Nagasumi and always tries to protect him when his life is on the line (when she is aware of what is happening and she is capable of doing so), she doesn't respond to Nagasumi's non-fatal physical abuse on others, such as beating from her father, friend Lunar, and his parents, simply brushing it off and accepting their reasons for doing so.
- Despite this, she proves to be very devoted to Nagasumi, even willing to go to war with another yakuza clan to retrieve him (even after she had been led to believe Nagasumi cheated on her and he was marrying another woman).
Powers and Abilities[]
- Mermaid Voice (Sonic Weapon): The voice is a mermaid's weapon.
- Ultrasonic Attack (Howling Voice / 超音波崩壊励起): She can unconsciously use ultrasonic waves for attack when frightened, angry, or in other intense emotions. Nagasumi often suffers the consequences (his eardrums are ruptured multiple times).
- Ancient Mermaid Songs (人魚古代歌詞): She can sing ancient mermaid songs with special effects. Known songs include:
- Hymn of Slumber (眠りの詩): Puts those within range who hear it to sleep.
- Hymn of Heroes (英雄の詩): Transforms a person into a super warrior. Typically used only on Nagasumi.
- Hymn of Joy (歡楽の詩): Makes people feel happy.
- Hymn of Festival (祭りの詩): Makes those who hear it dance.
- Exceptional Swordsmanship: She received training in the Shiranui-ryu (不知火流) sword style from Mr. Masamune (政) since childhood. Her skills are top-notch, on par with Shiranui Akeno, and ordinary members of the Seto group are no match for her when she wields a long object (like a sword or bamboo shinai).
- Other Skills: She is an excellent student and also very good at playing games, even beating Zenigata Mawari while using a game controller backwards
Experience[]
- Saving Nagasumi & The Engagement Begins: At the story's beginning, Sun saves the drowning Nagasumi Michishio in the Seto Inland Sea. According to mermaid law, there is a rule that "one's true form must not be known by others" (if a human sees a mermaid's true form, one of them must die or they must become family). To protect Nagasumi, San decides to marry him, becoming his fiancée.
- Moving to Saitama & School Life: Afterwards, Sun moves from the Seto Inland Sea to Saitama Prefecture, where Nagasumi lives, and enrolls in his school. She quickly becomes a popular, idolized beauty at school. She has a rivalry-turned-friendship with Edo-mae Runase (江戸前 留奈), whom she consistently outperforms in the Mafia children's singing contests.
- Facing Numerous Challenges: Sun and Nagasumi's relationship faces challenges and tests from multiple sides, including opposition from her father, Seto Gouzaburou (瀬戸 豪三郎), who dotes on his daughter excessively and constantly tries to eliminate Nagasumi; interference from Edo-mae Runase (who once declared she would take Nagasumi); and scrutiny from the mermaid inspector, Shiranui Akeno (testing her ability to hide her identity in the human world).
- Deepening Emotions & Growth: Despite the tumultuous, often hilarious process, Sun deeply loves and steadfastly protects Nagasumi. Nagasumi, in turn, becomes more masculine and courageous through repeatedly protecting Sun from crises, and their bond continually deepens.
Plot[]
Sun decided to face her fears and take on the responsibility of taking care of Nagasumi Michishio as her husband, although it doesn't make it easy on her due to almost everyone in the Seto group (except Ren Seto (Sun's mother) and Masa) who are against their union. However, as the series progresses, she truly falls in love with Nagasumi.
