Zac Blakely is one of the main characters in Mako: Island of Secrets. After living most of his life on land, Zac discovered his powers and true form after unintentionally falling into the moon pool on a full moon and forming a strong connection to Mako Island. He is portrayed by Chai Hansen.
Biography[]
Zac was born as a merman to a powerful Nothern mermaid and is a descendant from a royal line of merpeople who ruled the seas. When a rebel mermaid threatened the Northern Pod, Zac and his biological mother and sister were forced to flee to the Southern Hemisphere in the ocean surrounding Mako Island. His mother cast a powerful spell on him that concealed his true merman form and deprived him of all his powers, disguising him as human, so he could live a normal and safe life as a land boy. His official merman name is unknown, but he was named Zac Blakely by his adoptive human parents who found him on the beach.
Zac is the typical, perhaps just above average teenage boy, growing up on the Gold Coast. He's good looking, popular at school, he has a long-term girlfriend called Evie, parents who let him do what he likes, is sporty, gets good grades, and everyone knows him well. When he was 16 years old, Zac went camping on Mako Island with his best friend Cam where he accidentally fell into the moon pool and gained a tail and powers.
Trivia[]
- Zac's greatest disappointment with the awakening of his merman transformation is that he had to give up surfing. While he comes to love swimming as a merman, its not the same as riding a board against a wave.
- Zac stopped bathing regularly after his merman heritage reasserted itself. He tells Evie after she gets cursed into being a mermaid that he just swims around as a merman to compensate.
- Zac having longer, curly hair at the end of the series is a visual cue that he's fully embraced his merman heritage and feels free.
